The Alternative to an Unsuccessful Recycling System

We as a society are not succeeding at our recycling goals. Our electronics, computers, batteries and other hazardous materials must be separated, but other materials such as glass, papers and plastics should be just thrown in the garbage together, then sent to a central location. At the central location, this garbage will be separated by magnets, centrifuges and other technological innovations.

What is your opinion on this concept because what we are doing now as a society is not working.

I don't disagree that discarded electronics contain toxic materials and that bottles and cans are relatiely benign. But I believe that the main threat from landfills is the biomass fraction that decays into methane. The single biggest source of uncontrolled methane emissions in the U.S. comes from bio-degradation in landfills. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas, dozens of times more efficient at reflecting heat than CO2.

So I agree that there is an over emphasis on recycling chemically cans cans and bottles over other materials and this should be re-examined.

      Steve,
What about Waste Managements "Think Green"( www.wm.com/wm/thinkgreen/ ) Landfill Iniatives--using the Methane emissions to supply ENERGY?
Love to hear what you think--BUT please see what they propose on this LINK before you respond.

recycling is a great beginning for cleaning up mother earth but its not enough. we consume enormous amounts of stuff and we make tremendous amounts of trash. since there is always going to be trash why not create an economy based on trash, and the re-cycling of trash, rather than oil.

One reason why running an economy based on trash is difficult is that 'enormous' or 'tremendous' are relative. One thing that we consume in enormous quantities is petroleum. At about 20 million barrels per day, the total weight is about 3.2 billion tons per year. The amount of trash that is generated is 245 million tons per year. So we consume 13 times more weight of petroleum than we generate in trash. And consumption of natural gas and coal is on top of that.

WOW what about using the SUN(SOLAR ENERGY)
to supply ALL our energy needs--because the SUN never stops shinning.
And as far as the recycling problem, have all NON-TOXIC materials go to one central location as suggested on this entry(NOT landfills or incineraters-but a special place!)
This special place will have the technological components to seperate all the NON-TOXIC materials.

this makes real sense to me. alternative energies such as solar, wind and water could easily supply our energy needs. all three are sustainable sources of energy and it would be truly wonderful to live in a world where we work with the forces of mother nature rather than against them. does anybody know how many recyling plants there are in the united states?

thank you for the statistics stephen. an oil based economy is not sustainable; oil is finite and it is running out. trash will never run out thus an economy based on recycling is sustainable. kat

            Hey guys,
I LOVE everything connected to Hemp!!
Its UV protective, has Anti Bacterial qualities & its fabrics are so so breathable when combined with organic cotton or bamboo. Also I Love ALL the oils & seeds ,and other medicinal(helpful)products from HEMP!!
I bet that we could use HEMP as an energy source!! WHAT A WONDERFUL THING IF THIS WAS POSSIBLE!!
ESPECIALLY since IT leaves the soil in BETTER condition then before IT was there & IT uses no pesticides, BETTER THAN CORN!!
AND why not use HEMP to package ALL our products(diapers, tampons, packages, fancy marketing packages,ETC.)
ESPECIALLY since HEMP grows like a weed!!!!!!!!!

Hemp for Bio-Diesel would definitely be better than the BIGGEST PROFIT POTENTIAL that will destroy US!!
which is NUCLEAR WASTE-see www.SaveOurGreenPlanet and click NUCLEAR WASTE-our mother's cancer(on LINK page)
As we near the end of the century, the disposal of nuclear waste is becoming a concern. Many nuclear power plants around the world are nearing the end of their operating lives. This is particularly true in the United States where most nuclear power plants are approaching the end of the operational time period allowed in their licenses
