But I believe that the main threat from landfills is the biomass fraction that decays into methane. The single biggest source of uncontrolled methane emissions in the U.S. comes from bio-degradation in landfills. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas, dozens of times more efficient at reflecting heat than CO2.
  
  So I agree that there is an over emphasis on recycling chemically cans cans and bottles over other materials and this should be re-examined.
